Gillespie occupies the southeastern side of Sayreville, a Middlesex County borough along the south bank of the Raritan River. The name comes from the T.A. Gillespie Company Shell Loading Plant, a World War I munitions facility in the neighboring Morgan section that ranked among the largest of its kind anywhere. Sayreville itself was built on clay. Sayre and Fisher Brick Company, founded in the 1850s, produced 178 million bricks a year by 1913 and passed 6.2 billion by its 1950 centennial.

October 4, 1918 reshaped the area permanently. Explosions at the plant carried on for three days, flattened more than 300 buildings, and forced the evacuation of Sayreville, South Amboy, and Perth Amboy. A memorial to the unidentified dead still stands at Ernst Memorial Cemetery on Ernston Road. 3.    Use the right two lanes to take the exit toward NJ-440 South, arriving after 1.1 miles.
4.    Stay right and merge onto NJ-440 South by way of the ramp to I-287 North, then continue 2.7 miles.
5.    Carry on onto I-287 North for another 0.9 miles.
6.    Take exit 1B to merge onto US-1 South toward Trenton and cover the final 2.5 miles, with our showroom on your right.
