Menlo Park is a section of Edison Township carrying more historical weight than almost any square mile in New Jersey. Thomas Edison arrived in 1876 and set up his home and laboratory on the site of a failed real estate development that had borrowed its name from Menlo Park, California. Working there through 1884, he built what is widely called the world's first industrial research laboratory, developed the phonograph, and produced a workable incandescent filament. Christie Street became one of the first streets anywhere lit electrically.

Edison moved his operation to West Orange in 1887, and the buildings eventually fell into ruin.
